The Physical
These can be divided up into four divisions:
- Junbi Undo (Preparation Exercises):
These are specialised warm up exercises based upon Goju Ryu technique and prepare the student for Goju Ryu training. The exercises develop flexibility, endurance and strength.
- Hojo Undo (Supplementary Exercises):
The use of specialised auxiliary exercises tools (weight equipment and striking tools) to develop a strong and resilient body, endurance, improve co ordination and explosive destructive power.
- Kihon (Basic Training):
The techniques employed in basic training have their foundation in Kata. In basic training, individual and combination techniques are refined as well as the correct use of body dynamics and movement in both defence and attack. Kihon develops co ordination, agility, endurance and explosiveness in both offensive and defensive techniques.
- Kata (Forms):
These are a preset sequences of martial techniques passed down to us by the Karate Do Masters of old, who over time refined our style into the fighting tradition we have today. Kata therefore lies at the heart of Goju Ryu. All the principles, strategies, tactics and self defence applications that make up Goju Ryu come from Kata. Kata also refines the use of body dynamics and the development of breath control, agility, endurance and explosiveness in both offensive and defensive techniques.
